Deborrah Cooper asked:

Some women don’t understand that that dating is a sport – just like baseball, hockey, basketball and fishing.

These are the women at home alone weekend after weekend, fearful of flirting with a guy or taking the initiative to engage him in some way. And asking a man out on a date is unimaginable! Feeling that they are “too shy” or “too afraid of rejection” these ladies don’t understand that flirting and simple conversation such as “Hi there! My name is Deborrah, what’s yours?” is pretty much all they need to do to get things rolling.

Fearful people want guarantees that if they work up the nerve to flirt or converse with an attractive man they will have something to show for it at the end of the exchange. Doesn’t work that way folks. There are no guarantees in life, nor in dating, and there are certainly no guarantees in fishing!

True fisherman will freeze in the cold, get up at 3:00 a.m., and spend hours and hundreds of dollars on bait, tackle, special fishing chairs, and rubber hip boots to wade into the water with. They expend all this effort and money just to bag a stinky fish or a dead animal with bullet holes in it that they can boast endlessly about.

Should he be successful, a man will find great enjoyment in telling the story of that battle over and over again for years.

Fishermen use strategy and they use patience. They also dress appropriately for the environment in which they will be working, and they use the right bait. They may practice their craft in their back yard – throwing out their line until satisfied they can hit the mark and get their bait within inches of the spot aimed for.

Fishermen will then travel miles and miles (sometimes hundreds) to get to an area where the “fish are biting” or where it is rumored that the “biggest fish are.”

These guys aren’t there because they are guaranteed they will get a fish at all, especially the size or quantity of fish they hope to catch! Nope.

They are out there trying to catch a fish, and eagerly anticipating having a good time while doing it. They’ll sometimes be there from the crack of dawn until late in the night, focused intently on catching that one fish.

The determination and fixed focus is amazing to behold. And if a lucky fisherman should catch more than one fish, then it’s REALLY a good day!

This is the approach women need to have about dating.

Hey, This Sounds Like Fun!

Let’s say you decide to give fishing a try. There are three things that will happen when you finally arrive at the fishing spot and bait your hook:

(1) The man (fish) will swim up to the bait, look at it (maybe take a sample nibble). But then he decides that what is on your hook is not to his liking and he swims away. No problem. Re-bait and throw the line out again.

(2) He may take the bait, but only a little bit. He hook is merely caught a bit in his lip. When you try to reel him in and land him, he wiggles around and jumps off the hook. Hitting the water with a splash, he swims quickly away and disappears into the depths. It’s as if he were never there, he is gone so swiftly. You are disappointed because you almost had him! When this happens it means you were too aggressive, tried to rush the process, and forgot to use finesse when handling your fish. You didn’t let the fish hook HIMSELF.

(3) The fish will look at the bait, take a nibble, decide it’s yummy and with a big gulp, swallows the hook. When you yank that pole to set the hook and reel him in, there is no way in hell he is getting away! The bait and the hook are firmly embedded, and that fish is yours for the taking. Reel him in at a leisurely pace and enjoy his useless fighting to get away!

Yikes! This Fish Is a Reject!

Admittedly, there will be occasions when you hook a fish that you discover later isn’t what quite what you were hoping to catch. However, some women are so desperate for a fish that they will keep it. Any fish is better than no fish in their book!

But more discerning women will examine and subsequently throw back a fish that is by law too small, inedible, defective, or a different species than they were fishing for. Those reject fish will end up right on back in the water for other women to bother with because the fish is not what we wanted.

Sure, you invested time, energy and bait, and maybe even lost some tackle along the way, but so what? There are many more fish out there bigger and better and more to your liking.

On the flip side of the coin, sometimes you will throw your baited line out there and nothing will bite.

Sometimes you throw your hook out there and get caught on an old tire, or hook nothing but seaweed, and you’ll loose your bait and hook when you have to cut the line to get free. That’s all right too. Do fishermen quit just because of one little episode like that? NO! They dig into that tackle box, set the line up again and throw it back in the water.

Where Do I Find The Fish I Want?

Choosing your fishing spot is very important. Perhaps you’ve discovered that the area in which you are fishing is rocky or choking with debris. Good fishermen know when to cut their losses! They pack up and move to another area where the water is clearer, the fishing is better, and with smiles and laughs they start all over again!

Live bait is gross and wiggly, and dead bait might not be your flavor either. But you know what? You aren’t a fish!

If you want a prize fish, you give the fish what the fish wants! You also go fishing in the spot where you can catch the kind of fish you want to take home. Do you want wild river fish, a calm lake fish, or a stock pond farm raised variety? You don’t go fishing for catfish (bottom feeders) if you want a lively trout, and you don’t fish in a calm lake waters for a sturgeon.

The “fish” are biting, and I know this really great spot…

Tim Richardson asked:

Have you ever wondered why one ‘lucky guy’ seems to catch the biggest fish again and again, while the majority of other fishermen just seem to get the average catches? Why is that?

Many of us would love to catch those big catfish, carp, bass, trout etc, every time we go fishing. It may just be that the guy is a genius angler, but real fishing success is often simply about using bait that is more effective than most other anglers baits at getting round fishes natural fears and resistance to eating it!…

But how can we achieve this? Well here’s a few of some of the best most proven methods of increasing your catches, especially for carp and catfish, but can be applied very effectively to many other species:

1. Try taking a look at the most popular baits where you fish and eliminate any similarity your homemade bait has with them. This especially applies to your own unique fishing bait recipe or formulas. This removes the fishes ‘danger reference points’. This gives your bait a massive ‘edge’ because the fish will not associate your bait with danger, anything like as much as with the baits everyone else are using – after all , the whole point of a bait is simply to fool the fish into taking a hook into it’s mouth!

2. Make your bait different sizes, odd shapes, density, colors, flavors, with different attractors and additives, the more different to the usual bait the fish experience, the more effective your bait will be potentially be. Making your own bait puts the odds back in your favor and the power back into your hands – literally!

3. Absolutely pack your baits with “powerful ‘free amino acids’ (the type bodybuilders use as a liquid protein food supplement.) Even if you’re making a proprietary bait using a ‘commercial base mix’ that anyone can purchase, this will really set your bait apart and make it preferable to fish!

4. Pack bait with minerals, vitamins and trace elements – get a health tonic supplement from your local drug store. Very few people realize that these are in fact amazing attractors in their own right! An astounding edge is to massively increase the attractiveness and soluble nutritional message leaking from your bait, by soaking your hook bait in a mixture if fresh liquidized sweet corn, molasses and liquid protein food (so-called ‘free amino acids.)

5. It has been proven that when tested carp were provided with a number of complete foods providing all their nutritional requirements, preferred the food that had been sweetened. E.g., try sweetening honey and molasses, fruit sugar (fructose), or saccharin.

6. Add Sea salt to your bait – this is one of the most proven and unbelievable fish feeding triggers, and a great nutritional taste enhancer full of minerals. Nearly every animal and fish cannot live without salt!

7. For many fish including catfish and carp, pack your bait with fresh good quality digestible protein – it doesn’t need to be a large proportion, no more than a third of your bait. Ingredients such as trout pellet powder, meat and poultry meals, blood meal, fish meals and shellfish meals and liver powder are great.

Add energy rich carbohydrates to provide balanced nutrition and binding. For example, soya flour, semolina, or even ordinary white or brown wheat flour. For carp try adding some wheat germ it has excellent properties!

8. Add a small amount of oil to your bait for a balanced nutritional value. For catfish this could be you favorite fish oil. For carp the best is probably pure cold pressed hemp oil; it’s natures ‘super food’ and is one of the richest and most healthy and nutritional oils known to man and fish!

9. Give your bait some protein that’s been ‘pre-digested’ or ‘hydrolyzed.’ This is easily achieved by adding a small amount of proprietary powder, like pre-digested liver, fish meal or shellfish extracts to your bait; available from bait companies all across the worldwide web.

This method is incredibly effective, improving the fish attractive ‘amino acid profile of your bait. Fish are extremely efficient at detecting and utilizing amino acids, and you may well find that with the higher the rate of inclusion of these highly fish digestible ingredients, your catches and numbers of bigger fish soar too!

10. Allow your bait to ‘cure’ for 3-4 days prior to use; this allows your bait to start to ferment and lets bacterial enzymes release alcohols, sugars and increase the level of pre-digested proteins in your bait; all amazingly extremely good fish feeding triggers and attractors. See the difference this makes to your catches!

11. If you use ‘boilies’ rather than paste or dough baits, try chopping edges off your hook baits as if other fish have been ‘playing with your bait and taking small chunks out of it; this can really make the bigger fish ‘feel’ safer when they sample your hook baits – try piecing your hook baits right through to release the maximum attraction even from the center of your bait; it really works!

12. Try wrapping your bait and your hook (except the point) in a paste or dough. Try a mixture of ordinary flour, marmite, parmesan cheese, garlic granules, curry spices, sea salt, eggs and liquid amino acids – this mixture is pure ‘dynamite’ and really makes them bite!

13. One of the most successful paste / dough baits of recent times is made from a mixture of fish meal and a couple of pre-digested ingredients like pre-digested, liver powder, fish meals, pre-digested yeast powder or pre-digested shellfish extracts. Try binding them together with just ordinary flour and loads of liquid amino acids / protein food supplement.

The addition of corn steep liquor powder or liquid, and pure betaine is a massive boost to the power of attraction. (But use no eggs, or water in the mix; just ‘liquid protein’ amino acids. (A body building supplement.) This can be used as bait ‘soaks ‘and dips for pellets and boilies too. Experiment with different proportions to get your dough / pate to hold and last on your hook for different times. When you ‘bait up’ or ‘chum your swim with free baits like this, to attract the fish – hold on to your rods!!!

14. Add natural ingredients to your bait, for example, bird foods contain all kinds of fantastic foods fish love, like insects, seeds, grubs and worms. Many times, these encourage smaller fish to find your bait, and these can lead the bigger ones to your hook. Spirulina is a great attractor that attracts natural aquatic animals to your baits. These gather and form a brilliant natural ‘free bait’ so attracting fish ‘naturally!

15. Add a ‘crunch factor’ to your bait – many fish have food detectors inside their gills, and allowing fish to experience eating your bait like it was natural food, e.g., like shrimps or snails or mussels, is a great way to ‘turn them on’ and get more confident feeding and more bites!

The ‘chitin’ in this hard material is also a massive natural dietary requirement for carp, essential for healthy liver function, healthy blood, and repair and growth of skeletal structures. It is also high in nitrogen; an important building block of protein, also essential for repair, growth and other processes and functions in carp.

16. If you use ‘boilies’ for carp catfish, etc there is a simple method of improving them: If you buy your baits frozen in a bag, then open them up and let them defrost and ‘warm up for 3-4 days in advance of fishing. This gives bacterial enzymes the time to start breaking down your baits and releasing very attractive alcohols, sugars and amino acids for example. It really works well for better catches and can even promote quicker bites!

Making and adapting your own and readymade shop – bought baits to make them different to the rest, and far more effective than normal is a science, and a very satisfying ‘art’. When you have armed yourself with a range of great baits, the confidence you feel is awesome and especially satisfying when you’ve designed them made your own homemade baits yourself; and they catch your next ‘personal best!’

I could show you many real life examples of how using edges like these and others, have resulted in fantastic big fish catches.

I love researching and writing about fishing bait because it is one of the fastest short-cuts to success! I am into bait in a big way, having even researched the subject with a Ph.D biochemist to reveal the reasons why and how baits really work to catch fish. I’ve found that a little bait knowledge can catch you more fish, but the more you know – the more consistent your catches can become – and the more big fish you catch!

The truly amazing thing is, ANY angler can achieve truly amazing catches with just enough of the right bait knowledge! Then other anglers will wonder what his ‘secret to success’ is…

The author has many more fishing and bait ‘edges’ up his sleeve. Every single one can have a huge impact in improving your catches…

Jeffrey Van Dalsum asked:

Imagine yourself waking up at 3 a.m on a gorgeous early summer morning. You’ve got your rods, reels, and equipment loaded up in your truck. You’ve got your cooler packed with a few afternoon snacks and some drinks. You’re heart is pounding with the thoughts of being out on the ocean, free from the everyday stress of work and reality, and the hopes that this could be the day you hook the trophy fish, your giant. You drive down to the dock, load up all the equipment into the boat, and prepare for the long journey out into the open ocean. With a full tank of gas and your adrenaline pumping you fix your sights on the horizon and open up the throttle. Just as the sun is coming up over the horizon, you remember that following the sun leads to the land where giants roam the sea just below your feet. After an hour of steaming out into the open ocean your heart is pounding out of your chest with the first sighting of whales. You remember hearing that whales are the number one sign that bluefin tuna must be nearby. You see the fleet of boats, already with their spread set and working the waters around the whales in hopes of hooking the big one. You now know that this is the spot. This is where you are going make your stand, set your spread, and wait for that sweet sound. The sound that keeps you going back, day-after-day, the sound of the drag screeching at a thousand miles per hour, it’s the sound of all of your patience and persistence culminating in a moment that is yours. It’s you versus the fish.

Now that I’ve painted a picture in your head of what you can expect when you go bluefin tuna fishing, I’m now going to tell you a story of one of my own personal early bluefin fishing experiences. It was early July and the setting was exactly as I described it. It was one of those days, weather wise, that you dream about. The sun was out, the water was calm, and the fleet was out in our regular fishing spot.

My brother and I had set our spread behind the boat. We had been working a small pod of whales for almost two hours without even a bite or a sighting of tuna. Starting to get a little frustrated, we decided to move away from the fleet to a rather large circle of birds that were sitting on top of the water about a quarter mile away from the whales and the rest of the fleet. I was driving the boat and my brother was watching the spread as we approached the birds. All of a sudden I had a strange feeling that we were going to hook up as we went through the birds. I turned to my brother and excitedly said, “Get ready, we’re about to get some action!”

Skeptical of my gut feeling, he reluctantly stood up and got ready for the bite. Just as he was standing up, the left rod started screaming. A fish! My feeling was right, we had hooked into a nice fish. Little did I know what was to come next. Just as I had set my brother up in the fighting belt and he had started reeling the fish in, the right rod started buzzing. We must have raised a good amount of fish because the third and final spreader bar was nearly taken down too! Knowing that two fish was more than enough, I quickly reeled in the center bar to avoid hooking a third fish and being in way over our head.

At this time we were very novice bluefin tuna fisherman and we figured that my brother could reel in the one fish, we could land it, and then he could put on the fighting belt and bring in the other fish. Big mistake! Not only is this a bad idea because we had a limited crew but also because of how tiring reeling in back-to-back fish can be. Also, leaving the fish hooked and dragging it for several miles can be very detrimental to the fish’s health. We hadn’t realized just how big the fish that my brother was fighting was so we just kept the boat on idle speed and let the second fish stay hooked, hundreds of feet below the surface. After about fifteen minutes, we finally caught our first glimpse of the fish that my brother had been struggling to bring in. As soon as the fish saw the boat, he took off back down to the bottom of the ocean and the battle started all over again. After nearly forty-five grueling minutes, both fish and fisherman were completely exhausted and I brought out the gaff for the final step in landing the fish. I gaffed the fish in the back shoulder, and we pulled the fish over the edge of the boat. Seeing that this was clearly the biggest fish we had ever caught, we pulled out the tape measure to see just how big our fish was. Fifty-six inches! A true monster in the eyes of a couple of novice fisherman.

In pretty much a state of shock and pure euphoria we had almost forgot that we had been towing another fish for the better part of six miles. Pure luck, no doubt, is the only explanation for the second fish staying on the line. Seeing that my brother was completely exhausted from reeling in his fish, I put on the fighting belt and started reeling in the second fish. As I was reeling in the fish, my brother began packing the first fish in ice and placed it in our pelagic fish body bag. After about fifteen minutes we brought the second fish up, gaffed it, and got it in the boat. The reason that the second fish came up so fast was because it had already been tired out from being dragged for so long! With two fish in the boat and an exhausted “crew” we decided that we had had enough fishing for one day. With a full fish locker and a very satisfied feeling, we steamed back to the dock and closed the book on the day we doubled up for the first time.

Marty Davis asked:

France is a country that has a wonderful variety of fishing from the North through to the South and caters for fly fishing, course and game fishing on a wide range of rivers and lakes. Plus there is plenty of coast line for the sea angler to enjoy as well.

Carp fishing, cat fishing, not forgetting course and pike fishing are just some of the holidays that you can enjoy in France and whilst some places cater for the dedicated angler, others are more family orientated with accommodation and activities for the non fishers.

There are several types of fishing holiday available and for trout fishing, you would need to book from around the middle to end of March up until around the first week of September, which is the only time frame you are allowed to fish for trout in France.

In certain areas of France, salmon fishing is prohibited all year, so it is always best to check on the area you are going, prior to thinking that you will be able to get a licence for fly fishing, just like that.

Every country has numerous different regulations and France is no exception, with specific rules in place for what type of fish you can catch, when you are allowed to catch certain species of fish and what equipment you are allowed to fish with.

For some, this can be a daunting prospect, especially if you are not fluent in French, and although in some areas it will be easier than others to organise your fishing venue and licence, it is often easier to pre-organise your fishing holiday, so do try and get as much information as possible.

You must have a fishing licence to fish in rivers, streams and lakes throughout France unless these are privately owned or booked as a fishing holiday where the fishing licence requirements are normally included, but it is advisable to check this out before you travel!

If you need to obtain your own fishing permit, these can usually be obtained from the local fishing tackle shop or alternatively from the local bar or tobac. But if you are not sure on what is required then you can get advice from the local tourist information board, which can also provide maps of where you can and cannot fish.

If you are only going to be on holiday in France for a short time, then you can get what is known as The Carte de Peche de Vacances, which covers an angler for up to fifteen consecutive days and can be used between 1st June and 30th November. However, outside of these dates an annual fishing licence is mandatory.

An annual permit may be used for the whole year but bear in mind that this will only be for one department unless you get it stamped for different areas that you may go to and this is something that you will need for all fresh water fishing.

When it comes to catfish and carp fishing, you can get a licence to do this in the local rivers or public lakes, but the majority of people will want to opt for a carp fishing holiday on a dedicated lake. And when you go to a dedicated privately owned lake for carp fishing, cat fishing, etc, then you will not normally have to worry about getting your own individual licence as this will already have either been sorted out by the travel agency or the owner under their regulations.

Boats are allowed to be used quite a bit in France, but you may need to have a separate part to your licence to enable you to use a boat, even if it is only for baiting. But be careful if you have an echo sounder in your boat, as you are not allowed to have both this and your tackle in the boat at the same time!

Also, night fishing is prohibited in a lot of places in France, but when on a private fishing lake, or if with the correct licence on certain waters, this can be allowed. If not, then you can only fish half hour after sunrise to half hour before sunset. Some places on the rivers seine, rhone, mosselle, oise, madine and rhine, etc do allow night fishing, but there are many places that do ban the use of a bivvy or tent even if night fishing is allowed and you may only get away with a brolly!

Sea fishing off of the Atlantic coast is excellent and you will be pleased to know that a licence is not needed, and you can go out on a boat to catch bass, conger eels and even tuna or surf cast for sea bream to name but a few.

Fly fishing for salmon and trout is available in lots of public canals and navigable rivers but as with most countries, these will also contain other fish such as Pike, so beware! However some of the best places to try your hand at fly fishing are often owned by groups and in this case you would need to pay the owners for a permit to fish as well as having your licence.

Some of the best salmon fishing in France can be found in the Pyrenees Atlantiques and the river Loire is also a major salmon fishery for France.

Some of the best fishing in France is for course fishing where you will find lots of different species, but with carp, catfish and pike being in abundance, especially in areas such as the Dordogne, Lot and Charente Maritime. But if you like fishing for black bass, the river Rhone is known as a premier bass fishery, as is the river Saone.

The fishing dates and times do vary each year in France, so it is always advisable to check on these before planning your fishing holiday, and at the end of the day, forget about the headaches of the licences, just enjoy the whole experience and you too could be in with a chance of catching a fish that has never been caught before!

BASS FISHING and Bass Fly Fishing Truths

Bass Fishing and Fly Fishing Articles, Fish Recipes and Fishing Secrets.

Bass fishing has a fascinating history. It started in the late 18th century and continues to progress even today. Fishing was originally practiced in

search of food among the people in the south of the United States. Since then, it has encompassed all ages and nations. Today, countries such as

Australia, Cuba, South Africa, The United States and most of Europe participate in this kind of event.

Timelines

•	The year 1768 or 1770 represents the birth of bass fishing sports.

•	William Shakespeare Jr. materializes the production of a level wind device and secured its patent on 1897.

•	The William J. Jamison Co introduced the overly ornamented Shannon Twin Spinner in 1915 and was improved to create today’s spinner baits.

•	In 1932, President Franklin D. Roosevelt instituted the creation of The Tennessee Valley Authority and encouraged the creation and building of

numerous dams. These dams were later used as fisheries for different species of bass.

•	Five years later, DuPont Company filed patent for a nylon fishing net, this was later developed into nylon monofilament fishing line. Still in use

today. With some changes it stays straight and lasts quite a long time with cleaning and care.

•	In the year 1992 Larry Nixon, the famous fisherman in the history of bass fishing won $1M total earnings for this sport on this year. Today we have

bass tournaments all over the US and winnings of $100,000 to $1,000,000 are common.

Types of Bass Fish

Several fish species that are being caught in bass fishing are:

•	Micropterus psalmodies (Lacepede) – Largemouth Bass

•	Micropterus dolomieui – Smallmouth bass

•	Micropterus punctatus – Kentucky Bass

Just a note of reference, Australian Bass are different from the above North American Bass variants although most share similar features. Perhaps, the most

robust success of Bass Fishing was in the 1950s. Due to the development of modern fishing equipment, from bass boats, rods, lines, lures and various fishing

gears.

Electronic gear was incorporated among the host of equipment bass fishers used at that time. Reels of different types, which function in hauling and

hoisting, were also created. Statistics show that the audience base of this sport is increasing and that more and more people are getting interested in it

compared to tennis and golf.

Fly fishing for bass is a popular sport as well.

A good fiberglass or bamboo rod is required and comes in various sizes. The most used size is a 9 foot rod. The rod is longer than normal rods because the

rod is used to cast the heavier line.Rods will come in one, two or three piece units. Many fishermen prefer a two piece rod as it is easier to transport.

The type of fly line you use will depend on the rod you select. Look on the rod handle for the type of line to use with this rod. The reel of a fly rod is

very different than a spin casting rod and will hold less line. This is because the line is much thicker. With a spin rod the lure is pulling the line but

with a fly rod the line is pulling the lure. Most bass fly fishers will want to use a Up-Locking with extension butt type rod. Your fishing store will know

what your asking for.

Another important item for the fly fisher is a good fishing vest. You want as many pockets as you can get and large enough to hold your lure boxes and other

items. Also make sure there is a felt or wool fly holder to stick extra fly lures to. This makes it easy to change lures when needed.

Chest or hip waders are also a good idea when bass fly fishing. You will be able to wade the river and streams and get right on a bass while in the water.

Remember bass like to hide and strike their prey.

A good pair of wading shoes or boot will help too. Find some with good soles of leather, felt or non slippery texture. I used to use rubber soled boots but

they were slippery on moss covered rocks in West Virginia, I now have felt glued to the bottoms and find this works well.

When bass fly fishing do not be worried about not catching any bass, it maybe trout time…So fish for trout. They are fun to catch and just as tasty. Get

Kevin Lee asked:

Thinking of taking fish oil supplements but worried about mercury in fish oil? How do you know if your fish oils supplements are of the highest quality and purity?

Everyone knows that fish is good for our health. Health authorities advocate eating 2 – 3 servings of fish per week for cardiovascular health. Fish, especially fatty fish such as tuna and mackeral, are high in omega 3 fatty acids – special fats that offer tremendous health benefits.

Omega 3 fatty acids have been proven to help reduce lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, reduce your risk for strokes, lessen your chance for blood clots and reduce inflammation.

The problem with trying to eat this amount of fish is the potential exposure to mercury, PCB’s and lead. Studies have found that residents of countries that regularly consume fish have higher mercury levels in their bodies, compared to people that don’t eat fish at all.

What’s the normal mercury level in humans?

People that don’t eat fish will have mercury levels of about 2.0 micrograms/Liter (µg/L). People eating 2 – 4 servings of fish per week may have mercury levels up to 8.4 µg/L.

According to the Unites States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), the estimated safe daily intake of mercury is 0.1 µg/kg body weight per day. This amount was based on a study in the Faroe Islands, where fish containing significant amounts of mercury formed a large part of the diet.

This same study compared test scores on development for children whose mothers had been exposed to mercury during pregnancy. A European Union scientific review, in 2001, supported this safe daily intake level of mercury.

So how can you get the benefits of fish, without increasing your exposure to mercury and other contaminants found in fish?

Researchers believe the use of concentrated fish oils may be the key to getting your daily dose of healthful omega 3 fatty acids, while avoiding your exposure to mercury.

Is there mercury in fish oil supplements?

Many people wish to improve their diet and health with fish, but are concerned if there is mercury in fish oil supplements.

A study published in the Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (2003) by doctors at Harvard Medical School looked at 5 different brands of fish oil supplements to determine if there was mercury in fish oils.

The 5 brands analyzed were:

1. Omega Brite Fish Oils

2. Sundown Nutrition Fish Oils

3. Kirkland Signature Fish Oil Concentrate

4. CVS Pharmacy Fish Oil Concentrate

5. Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega

Fish oil capsules from each sample were punctured and the liquid contents were sent for mercury level analysis. The lower limit of detection was 6 µg/L. Mercury levels reading lower than this level were considered insignificant.

Results showed that none of the fish oils brands analyzed contained significant levels of mercury. The highest readings were found in the Omega Brite at 12 µg/L of mercury and the CVS brand contained 10 µg/L.

Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega, Sundown and Kirkland brands all measured insignificant levels of mercury below 6 µg/L.

The researchers concluded that mercury in fish oils analyzed is similar to the levels of mercury found in people that regularly eat fish. This lead researchers to believe that the mercury is either removed during the manufacturing process or the fish used to make the fish oils were relatively free of mercury.

This study also showed that even large doses of concentrated fish oils should not cause mercury toxicity. Based on the research results, six capsules of 1000 mg. Omega Brite fish oil contains 0.072 µg of mercury. This is equal to 2.1% of the average daily mercury intake of the typical American population.

Based on this study, it shows that most fish oils supplements contain zero to insignificant levels of mercury. Of course, this will depend on which brand of fish oil supplement you’re using. Some manufacturers use FDA-registered labs to test their products for mercury and other contaminants. Other fish oil manufacturers use other third-party laboratories to test their products.

To avoid mercury in fish oils you should buy products made by reputable companies. Look at their websites to determine their level of quality, try to find out how they manufacture their fish oils and what they do to ensure you’re getting a high quality product free of mercury, lead, PCB’s, and other contaminants. This research will go a long way in helping you avoid any mercury in fish oils.

Sinta Makah asked:

Sorting out relevant information on any topic is very difficult but this article on fishing tries to put all the relevant information about fishing at one place.

Being interested in fishing means that you must be eager to gain as much information on fishing as possible. To make things easier for you, we have this article for you having all the relevant information on fishing.

When we decided on writing this article on fishing, we knew that we could provide our readers with something which would be different from what was being presented to them. And now when you are reading this article, you would have to decide on our success.

Fishing is a sport, but it has become less about survival and more about fun in recent decades. There is an issue of fish becoming depleted and many anglers are now employing the practice of catch and release fishing. Catch and release fishing is a great theory, but many people are doing it incorrectly and as a result many fish are dying. A few steps should be followed when trying to catch and release a fish. Once you get the hang of how to do it correctly, you will be able to enjoy your hobby and keep the population of fish full in your favorite stream or lake.

Article reading is something which is done to gain knowledge and information about a particular topic and if these means are not achieved then reading the article would be a waste of time. Now, when you are reading this article on fishing, how would you rate the time spent in reading it?

The best place to start is with the hooks. A fish that has a hole through its mouth is going to be more likely to survive than a fish with a hole in its lung or gill. If you happen to hook a fish in the gut, the best thing to do is to cut off the hook as much as you can then release the fish. Many times the hook will dissolve and the fish will spit it out, but they can also live with a rusted hook hanging from them. Whatever you do, do not tug on your line to pull a hook out or you will severely hurt the fish. If you are able to easily remove the hook, use a pair of needle nose pliers. The process of pulling the hook out is easier if you remove the barbs from the hooks, but try not to wiggle while you pull the hook out.

Learning is a continuous process and you can never claim that you everything worth knowing about any topic and we think that you must have realized this when you have started reading this article.

Fish are obviously unable to survive outside of the water. Therefore, the longer that it takes you to release them, the more it becomes as if you are suffocating them. The way that a fish is gripped when out of the water will make a big difference. For instance, avoid touch a fish’s body with your bare hands. The fish have a slimy protective coat that will be stripped if you touch them with your hands. If you have to touch a fish, make sure that your hands are wet. You may want to wear gloves to protect your hands from cuts or permeating fish smells.

It goes without saying that you are interested in fishing and that is what prompted you to read this article. It is now for you decide if your effort has been fruitful or not.

Part of the fun in fishing is to “play out” the fish. The struggle can be what some anglers wait all day to do. Fish are like humans; when they “work out,” they build up lactic acid. When you are fighting a fish, they are fighting too. Just like when someone works his or her body out and it feels sore, a fish experiences the same thing. The build up of lactic acid can be toxic to a fish even days later. Therefore, if you are going to practice catch and release, try to keep the struggle to a minimum.

Hasn’t this article made you aware of the fact that so much information existed on fishing and that you were unaware of even the fact that you were unaware of it?

Try not to let a fish flop around when you catch them. A fish that flops around can bruise or damage its internal organs, causing them to die later from the injuries that are incurred. You can also revive a fish if you need to do so. A fish is likely to run out of oxygen and pass out, so to speak. In order to revive a fish, you place the fish in the water with their belly down and gently grasp their tail. Start to slowly move their tail back and forth until they give you the signal that they are ready to take off into the water. Sometimes you will need to repeat the process more than once, but don’t let a fish go until they are ready. A fish that is not ready to swim could get carried away and swept into rocks or embankment and cause serious injury.

More than anything, when you are practicing catch and release, have everything ready to go. Make sure that your camera, pliers, and gloves are in reaching distance. Try to take the precautions necessary to preserve fish and one of America’s favorite pastimes.

Are you looking for some inside information on fishing? Here’s an up-to-date report from fishing experts who should know.

Jeanie Smith asked:

Before you attempt to catch fish, you need to find out where they are. Remember that fish are found nearly everywhere there is water with sufficient levels of food, oxygen, and cover. You are certain to be within a relatively close distance to a body of water that has fish living in it. For an angler, this is good news. They are there – now you have to find them!

All fish are different. Because of this, they do not all live in the same kind of waters. Fish tolerate different environmental conditions. Some of these include differing levels of salt, amounts of oxygen, types and amounts of food, water temperature, and hiding areas. The most distinguishing element of fish is salt. Some fish do not live in areas where there is a lot of salt.

On the other hand, some fish need salt to survive. There are also some types of fish that can live in both saltwater and freshwater. Freshwater ponds, reservoirs, and rivers contain significantly less salt than the ocean. North America has a majority of freshwater bodies. Some of the fish that you will find in these freshwater bodies are the bluegill, carp, catfish, crappie, and bass. In contrast, many species of fish live in the ocean’s salty water. Thanks to their kidneys, these fish are able to keep the proper balance of salt in their body. The more popular saltwater fish are the bluefish, cod, sea trout, tuna, and flounder.

Another factor that weighs heavily on where you will find certain fish is oxygen. All fish must have a certain level of oxygen to survive. Some fish, such as carp, survive on less oxygen than fish like trout. The living plants within a lake or stream directly affect the amount of oxygen in the water. They add oxygen to the water through photosynthesis. This process uses sunlight to make food. Oxygen also makes its way into water from the surrounding air. You will find certain fish in certain bodies of water based on what kind of food is there. It is based on the amount and type of food available in a setting. All fish need to eat, so the amount of competition with other fish is a factor that determines which fish will be in certain areas.

Fish prefer different water temperatures. Some fish are flexible. They have the ability to live in a wide range of temperatures. Other fish, however, need either cold or warm water to survive. Trout is an example of this. You will only find trout in cold water. Your best bet for finding a certain type of fish is to learn about the type of water it prefers. They are most often found in water that is close to their preferred temperature. We, as humans, can control one factor when it comes to where fish live. Water quality often determines where a fish will live and we have the means to ensure a high level of water quality. All fish must have water that has adequate levels of oxygen. Good-quality water will obviously support more species of fish than water that is polluted. Water that is stagnant, polluted, or lacking adequate oxygen simply cannot support a large group of fish.

While some fish, such as carp, live in water that is not very clean, most fish need a high quality of water in order to survive. Discovering the places where fish live is the first step to successful fishing. Several factors come into play when looking for a fish’s habitat. Some of these are the levels of salt and oxygen found in water. Another factor is the temperature of the water. All fish are different. Because of this, it benefits you, the angler, to take the time necessary to find the bodies of water in which they live.

Fish oil is recommended for a healthy diet because it contains the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), precursors to eicosanoids that reduce inflammation throughout the body

Here are some great benefits of fish oil:

Some experts believe that taking fish oil (in any form) can help regulate cholesterol in the body,[attribution needed] because fish oil has high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. The regulation occurs through effects of the EPA and DHA constituents on Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR?). Besides cholesterol regulation, benefits include anti-inflammatory properties and positive effects on body composition. However, the preferred source of Omega 3 should be from the fish’s body, not the liver.

Fish oils are fascinating nutrients. Almost every aspect of our health, physical and mental, is related to the types of fatty acids that make up our cells and tissue, including vision. And it appears that most of us are not ingesting the right kind of fatty acids, the ones found in fish and fish oils. I have discovered that fish oils supplements help eyesight. I have also discovered a combination of herbs and nutrients that improve eyesight within hours. See below. Fish oils are also beneficial for mental health and sexuality.

1. Fish oil prevents heart attack – Dr Alexander Leaf and colleagues at Harvard Medical School found that eating oily fish like salmon or tuna at least twice a week could prevent a heart attack.

2. Fish oil protects against heart disease and stroke – Researchers at Southampton University found that omega-3 fish oil stops the build up of fatty deposits in the arteries, protecting against heart disease and stroke.

3. Reduction of Breast, Colon and Prostate Cancer. And finally, omega 3 fish oil has been shown to help prevent three of the most common forms of cancer – breast, colon and prostate. Science tells us that omega 3s accomplish this in three ways. They stop the alteration from a normal healthy cell to a cancerous mass, inhibiting unwanted cellular growth and causing apoptosis, or cellular death, of cancer cells.

4. Fish oil prevents mothers from giving birth to very small babies – The University of Bristol research team found that a mother-to-be who eats fish during the later stages of pregnancy is less likely to have a very small baby.

5. Stopping the buildup of fatty deposits (triglycerides) in the arteries.

6. Fish oil helps with prostate cancer – The Paterson Institute researchers found that a diet rich in a fat found in oily fish and some seeds may protect men with prostate cancer from developing a more aggressive form.

7. Fish oil reduces the growth of breast cancer – Researchers from Indiana University found that when mixing compounds from omega-3 fatty acids with the anaesthetic propofol, together they appeared to reduce the growth of breast cancer cells.

8. Fish oil reduces inflammation – The researchers from Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital found that a diet high in oily fish like salmon and mackerel may help improve inflammatory conditions such as arthritis; the oily fish diet worked best when combined with low aspirin doses.

9. Protection from Stroke and Heart Attack. When plaque builds up on arterial walls and then breaks loose, it causes what’s known as a thrombosis, which is a fancy way of saying clot. If a clot gets stuck in the brain, it causes a stroke and when it plugs an artery, it causes a heart attack. Research shows omega 3 fatty acids break up clots before they can cause any damage.

10. Fish oils may be helpful to people with lupus since fish oils have anti-inflammatory properties.

11. Fish oil betters brain and visual development in children – Bristol University researchers found that a mother-to-be who eats oily fish is more likely to have children with better brain and vision developments.

12. Fish oil has also been used to treat conditions such as depression, eczema, IBD, macular degeneration and arthritis. Fish oil benefits the heart significantly, as well as the rest of the body.

How much fish oil should adults take?

A good dose for adults is roughly ~6 grams of salmon oil per day with food.

Should everyone take fish oil?

Generally yes. In a minority of cases some individuals feel strange on fish oil and do better on other oil types.

Although you can get the benefits of fish oil from eating cold water fish such as salmon or cod, there is always the danger of mercury contamination as well as other toxins. This is why pregnant women and young children are advised against eating fish.

The other issue is that you cannot be sure that the fish you are eating contains enough EPA and/or DHA to ensure the maximum fish oil benefits. It is always possible that the concentration of these important nutrients is reduced during the manufacturing/handling processes.

Fish has achieved health food status due to research that shows eating fish lowers the risk of heart disease. Public health agencies have recommended eating fish for several years. But new research continues to support additional links between diets that include fish and various measures of heart health.

While fish is a healthy source of lean protein, it is the omega-3 fatty acid content of fish, particularly fatty fish like salmon and tuna that is thought to help protect against heart disease. The key to lowering your risk of heart disease with fish seems to be eating enough fish each week to raise your blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids.

A recent study compared the omega-3 fatty acids in the blood of Japanese men living in Japan, Japanese men living in the U.S. and American men living in the U.S. Japanese men living in Japan had twice the blood level of omega-3 fatty acids and the lowest rate of heart disease as the other two groups. In addition, higher blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the Japanese men improved at least one measure of atherosclerosis. This and other studies provide ample evidence that it may be omega-3 fatty acids from fish and seafood that are keeping the rates of heart disease in Japan so low compared with other countries.

The omega-3 fatty acids are richest in fish with the most fat. The American Heart Association recommends that healthy people eat fish at least two times per week and to include fish like salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, lake trout, herring and sardines. These fatty fish are rich in two of the long chain omega-3 fatty acids associated with lower rates of heart disease.

There are many ways that omega-3 fatty acids might help the heart. They are thought to reduce platelet aggregation and make the blood thinner, reduce triglyceride levels, and prevent arrhythmia. Supplementing the diet with fish or fish oil seems to greatly reduce the chances of having a heart attack. Supplementation is even being considered as a common intervention for people at a very high risk of having a heart attack.

But eating other types of fish can be heart healthy as well. Fish is low in saturated fat and eating fish can help keep levels of dietary saturated fat low and lower your risk of heart disease. And while fatty fish are highest in omega-3 fats, most fish have some of the heart these heart healthy fats. The levels of omega-3 fatty acids also vary with the diet fed to the fish. So, farm raised fish can have a very different fatty acid profile than wild fish of the same species. Because of this variability, a good approach is to eat a different types of fish and to consistently include fatty fish.

A new study compared fatty fish and lean fish for their affects on heart disease risk. While heart disease patients who were placed on a diet that included fatty fish several times per week had higher blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids at the end of the study, blood pressure actually decreased in the patients who ate lean fish several times per week. The effect of eating fish on blood pressure may be due to some other component of fish than omega-3 fatty acids.

What’s the best way to gain the heart health benefit of omega-3 fatty acids from fish? Eating fatty fish is the best way. Many research studies support the heart health benefit of eating fish. But if you can’t eat fish, don’t like fish, or can’t eat enough to meet recommendations, supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids or fish oil is a good alternative. Intervention studies have proven some benefit of taking these supplements to reduce the risk of heart disease. Talk with your health care provider if you are considering taking a dietary supplement.
