If you don’t have one,buy a stringer. As you catch them, loop them on there & it allows them to remain in the water til your done.

Or,you can get a fisherman’s pail that has holes in it that you can put them in & submerge it til your done.

The free way is to take a pale and fill it with river water and store you trout in the pale while you fish. If you want, you can buy a container( can’t think of the name of the thing) at a sporting goods store but don’t use the fish stringer with trout. They are to small and will die

you can use a creel , fill it with wet moss or grass and it will keep your fish cooler. And you can rewet it often with cool creek water .You can gut the trout too. that will help them keep better

they make a fish basket that keeps them a live a lot bettter than a stringer

You could go with a fish stringer or as Brandon pointed out a creel is a good go also. I’ve got an OLD wicker creel, think she be around 50 years plus (if thats anything at all) and I’ll do the same ie., use of leaves, moss, etc.. That along with fresh creek water they’ll keep nice and cool. As far as how stringer stays on shore, there’s usually a ring at the end of it ~ just put a strong twig through it and push it inta’ the ground. Common sense is goin’ ta’ be a factor, especially if ya’ have some nice size fish. Cabela’s link below has a real nice stringer if ya’ go that way…

Go to your local tackle dealer and ask for the Catch n keep shore basket!
They do come in a handy small size and they keep your fish very fresh and alive!
These baskets have a channel that leads to a open area that will be in deeper water.Just toss the fish in and if you want to release them just open the basket and let them go.The basket is not bulky and totes easy and just flips right out for easy use!Ask for the 6 foot size they should cost around $12 to $16 !

Using some form of creel works. Either the wicker style or the canvas style. For either, put moss or grass in the bottom. The wicker style allows water to flow through it while wading. The canvas style needs to be soaked thoroughly to help maintain a lower temp. The other way is to use a stringer. I have found that they aren’t long enough to anchor on shore so I tie on an extra length of rope that I can secure to the bank.

Hammer a strong stake into the ground near the shore and tie your stringer to it. Maybe a close tree could be used to tie off to.

There are many types of creels out there that, although they may not keep the fish alive for the entire day, will keep the fish from spoiling. A chain or nylon stringer is one method. Simply attach the end to something on shore that is anchored or heavy enough to prevent the fish from swimming away.

A creel is another option. An old school wicker basket creel works very well. As one of the previous people answered, fill it with some grass and re-wet it frequently throughout the day. =-1&parentCategory=9964&cat4=9963&shop_method=pp&feat=9964-tn

There are some other bags out there as well made of canvas with a vinyl lining. Below is a link to one. Be careful with these. You will need to frequently update the water. The black lining causes heat.

The links are probably not going to provide the best prices, but they are good pictures of what I am suggesting.

Everyone already pretty much answered this Q.

Just a note: If I intend to keep a few trout, I will immed fillet the ones I’m gonna keep, (you have to keep a “patch” of skin for regulations in MN).

If you fillet the ones you keep “quickly/as you catch them”( I will usually only keep 2-3 ), it leaves more room in your cooler and you don’t have to “hassle” with “fishguts” & “mess” at the end of your fishing trip. In reality, this leaves you more time to fish!

Good luck! Make some “Trout ‘Almondine” for me!

i read your question 2 days after posting so i hope is not too late (for the fish…lol)

3 important factors: Fish are cold blooded organisms that breed with gills.

So, they have to be on water continuously, by having oxygen to breed and something to eat.

In your case, it depends on the species you have. Different species different factor values. The water must be oxygenised and salted (that means you need every 3-5 days to import water from the same sourse you got the fish). It is also needed to be fed. The food for the goldfish sometimes is not appropriate because it is designed to feed fish from freshwater systems and you have a fish from the shore, meaning from the sea which is brackish.

In my opinion as a fish biologist, the best thing to do is not to take the fish from the shore or if it is in bad condition outside, adjacent the shore put in the sea again.

    good luck
