fishing
mrrunty asked:

I live in and fish in central Florida. I have recently started using Eagle Claw 1/0 circle hooks, but I miss way too many fish. My bait size is about 2in x 2in. If anyone knows of a better hook for fishing this way please let my know.

  1. R W Says:

it would depend somewhat, what you are fishing for & how you go about setting the hook.

it would be good to know that, before giving a qualified answer

I fish around the Dunedin/Clearwater/St. Petersburg area and use cut bait. The size hook I use is 2/0. And I also promote the use of circle hooks. I rarely miss more than 3 bites in a row.
    Hope that helped ?

    Fishingidiots dead on!

A nice 1/0 circle hook is almost 90% effective most of the time.

Remember to not “strike” when using circle hooks. You would want to quickly “reel” and slowly raise your rod only.

    Good luck!

I fish live and cutbait a lot, and I would recommend treble hooks if you’re missing them. I’ve caught a lot of speckled trout on these things.

What are you targeting? Use smaller cutbait! The aim is for them to eat the whole thing, not nibble it off piece by piece. Unless you’re going for cobia or tripletail or something like that, I would stick to about 1×1 at the maximum.

For the big guys, though, use whole shrimp, live or dead, or a jig you like.

I would use a trebel hook

2/0 and up circle hook. more sporting than a treble, less dangerous than a ” j” hook. takes a little more skill than others

Mustad 92553 is what we use for salmon with plug cut herring here on the west coast. Or the Gamakatsu equivalent.

Try a ‘Kahle’ or ‘Croaker’ style hook, it’s similar to a circle hook but it has a wider gap. They work great for cut, dead or live bait. good luck!
